Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Options

Lake Nebagamon WI electrician on power line poleThere are multiple options to receive electrician training in a technical or vocational school near Lake Nebagamon WI. You may enroll in a diploma or certificate program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at a few schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three options. Frequently these programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship program, which are required by the majority of states in order to become licensed or if you wish to become certified. Bellow are brief summaries of the three most typical programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally offered by Wisconsin vocational and trade schools and require about a year to finish. They provide a solid foundation and are geared towards students who wish to join an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees involve 2 years to finish and are provided by Wisconsin community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more comprehensive education while supplying the foundation that readies students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain Wisconsin institutions, but are less popular at four years than the other briefer programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically four years be performed before licensing. Because of that, many students are eager to begin their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their educational program.

The period of apprenticeship varies by state, but typically around four to five years of prior experience is required in order to take the licensing examination. The exams usually test general knowledge and electrical theory, in addition to understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional way for an electrician to distinguish him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered vary by state and may be earned in numerous specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases involves three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician vocational school that you pick not only furnishes a solid academic foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you might be required to pass in the future.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Speak to some of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to some of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they hold.
