Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Programs

Minong WI electrician on power line poleThere are multiple ways to get electrician training in a technical or vocational school near Minong WI. You can enroll in a diploma or certificate program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some schools, but are not as common as the other three alternatives. In many cases these programs are made available in conjunction with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by the majority of states in order to become licensed or if you want to become certified. Bellow are brief explanations of the 3 most typical programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically provided by Wisconsin vocational and trade schools and take approximately a year to finish. They provide a solid foundation and are geared towards individuals who want to get into an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees take 2 years to complete and are offered by Wisconsin junior or community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more extensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are offered at some Wisconsin institutions, but are less preferred at four years than the other shorter programs. Many states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases four years be carried out before licensing. Because of that, most students are anxious to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their academic program.

The certifications available differ by state and can be earned in several specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually entails 3 levels of competency:

  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician tech school that you pick not only delivers a strong academic foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you might be required to take in the future.
