Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Programs

Rock River WY electrician on power line poleThere are several options to obtain electrician instruction in a trade or technical school near Rock River WY. You can choose a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three options. In many cases these programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program, which are required by most states in order to become licensed or if you would like to earn certification. Following are short descriptions of the three most typical programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are typically offered by Wyoming vocational and trade schools and take about a year to complete. They furnish a solid foundation and are geared towards students who want to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees require two years to complete and are provided by Wyoming junior or community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more well-rounded education while providing the foundation that readies students to join their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are offered at some Wyoming institutions, but are less favored at four years than the other shorter programs. The majority of states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases four years be carried out prior to licensing. Because of that, many students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their academic program.

The exams commonly assess general knowledge and electrical theory, along with understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional way for an electrician to differentiate him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available differ by state and may be earned in many specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases includes three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET).
