How to Pick the Best Electrician Trade School near Phil Campbell Alabama

Phil Campbell AL electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to learning to be an electrical contractor or tradesman is locating an electrician trade school near Phil Campbell AL. But with numerous vocational schools to choose from, just how do you approach making certain that you enroll in the right one? Especially because there are so many variables to examine. For example, some prospective students will begin by looking for schools that are close to their home. Once they have identified several that are within driving distance, they will pick the one with the least expensive tuition. Even though location and cost are significant, they are not the only things that must be considered. Also important are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, in addition to their job placement and graduation rates. These and additional qualifications should influence your final decision when choosing an electrician school. We will talk about that checklist in greater detail later in this post. But to begin with, let’s review a little bit about becoming an electrician and the educational choices that are offered.

Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Options

Phil Campbell AL electrician on power line poleThere are three general options to obtain electrician instruction in a vocational or trade school near Phil Campbell AL. You can choose a diploma or certificate program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at a few schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three alternatives. In many cases these programs are made available together with an apprenticeship, which are required by the majority of states to be licensed or if you want to become certified. Bellow are short summaries of the 3 most typical programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are typically offered by Alabama trade and technical schools and require about a year to finish. They furnish a good foundation and are geared towards those who would like to enter an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees require 2 years to complete and are offered by Alabama junior or community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more well-rounded education while providing the foundation that readies students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are accessible at certain Alabama institutions, but are less favored at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically 4 years be completed prior to licensing. For that reason, the majority of students are eager to begin their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician License and Certification Criteria

Phil Campbell AL electrician wiring boxElectricians in Phil Campbell AL can perform a multitude of tasks, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in buildings and homes are up to code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The length of apprenticeship varies by state, but generally about four to five years of practical experience is needed in order to take the licensing exam. The exams commonly assess general knowledge and electrical theory, in addition to understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional means for an electrician to identify him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available differ by state and can be acquired in various specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases entails three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician tech school that you choose not only provides a solid academic foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you might need to take in the future.

Attending Electrician Schools Online

Phil Campbell AL student attending electrician school onlineAn alternative that you might have considered is selecting an online electrician program to earn a degree or a certificate. Even though online training programs have become more prevalent as a way of attending class without the need for travel, in this case they are not completely internet based. Pretty much all electrician training programs require partial attendance on campus to get hands-on practical training. But since the remainder of the classes can be attended online, distance learning may be a more accommodating option for individuals that have minimal time for education. And as a bonus numerous online schools have a lower tuition cost compared to their on campus competitors. Travelling expenses from Phil Campbell AL are also reduced and a portion of the study materials may be available on line also. Each of these advantages can make online electrician vocational schools more economical and accessible. And a number are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our questions to ask checklist.

Points to Ask Electrician Technical Schools

Questions to ask Phil Campbell AL electrician schoolsNow that you have decided to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to refine your training options. Because there are numerous electrician tech and trade schools in the Phil Campbell AL area, it’s important to have a checklist of criteria that each program must meet. The initial 2 that we mentioned were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that must be an option that your final school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be important when making your determination, there are additional factors that need to be considered also. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to research prior to choosing an electrical technical school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician trade programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, such as electrical technology. Verify that the Phil Campbell AL program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you get an excellent education, it may help in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited programs. Additionally, a number of states require that the electrician training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate might suggest that students were unhappy with the program and quit. It might also signify that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which may mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist Phil Campbell AL graduates acquire apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician trade programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrician contractors or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have working partnerships with Phil Campbell AL area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by providing practical training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical specialist you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Phil Campbell AL electrical contracting company if they can provide some suggestions. Also keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your Phil Campbell home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there can be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Speak to some of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Phil Campbell AL, verify that the schools you are considering offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family issues.

You originally came to this website due to an interest in Electronics Trade School and wanting more information on the topic Electrical Training Certificate. But as we have discussed in this article, there are several things that you will need to evaluate and compare among the training programs you are considering. It’s a must that any electrician training program that you are considering includes a good deal of hands-on instruction. Classes should be smaller in size and each student must have their own equipment to train with. Classroom instruction should provide a real-world context, and the training program should be current and conform with industry standards. Training programs vary in duration and the type of credential offered, so you will need to decide what length of program and credential will best satisfy your needs. Every program provides unique options for certification also. Probably the best approach to research your final list of schools is to check out each campus and talk with the faculty and students. Invest some time to monitor a few classes. Tour the campus and facilities. Make certain that you are confident that the training program you select is the best one for you. With the right training, effort and commitment, the final result will be a new trade as a professional electrician in Phil Campbell AL.
