How to Enroll in the Right Electrician Vocational School near Concord California

Concord CA electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to learning to be an electrical contractor or tradesman is locating an electrician trade school near Concord CA. But with so many vocational schools to choose from, just how do you tackle making sure that you enroll in the best one? Especially since there are so many points to consider. For example, many students will begin by searching for schools that are close to their home. When they have located a few that are within driving distance, they will select the one with the least expensive tuition. While cost and location are significant, they are not the only things that must be evaluated. Also important are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, as well as their graduation and job placement rates. These and additional qualifications should contribute toward your ultimate decision when choosing an electrician school. We will address that checklist in more detail later in this post. But to begin with, let’s review a little bit about being an electrician and the training choices that are available.

Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Programs

Concord CA electrician on power line poleThere are three general options to receive electrician training in a vocational or trade school near Concord CA. You may enroll in a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at a few schools, but are not as common as the other three options. In many cases these programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by most states to become licensed or if you wish to become certified. Bellow are short summaries of the 3 most common programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are usually offered by California trade and technical schools and require about a year to complete. They provide a solid foundation and are geared towards individuals who wish to enter an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees involve 2 years to complete and are provided by California junior or community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more comprehensive education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some California colleges, but are less popular at 4 years than the other shorter programs. Most states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases four years be performed prior to licensing. For that reason, many students are eager to begin their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Requirements

Concord CA electrician wiring boxElectricians in Concord CA can carry out a multitude of duties, such as testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The duration of apprenticeship differs by state, but commonly about 4 to 5 years of practical experience is needed before taking the licensing exam. The exams commonly evaluate general knowledge and electrical theory, in addition to knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary way for an electrician to differentiate her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered differ by state and can be obtained in several specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases entails 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician tech school that you choose not only delivers a solid educational foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you might need to pass in the future.

Attending Electrician Online Schools

Concord CA student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you may have considered is selecting an electrician online school to earn a certificate or degree. While online training programs have become more accepted as a means of attending class without needing to travel, in this situation they are not entirely internet based. Virtually all electrician schools require partial attendance on-campus to receive hands-on practical training. But since the rest of the classes can be attended online, distance learning may be a more practical option for students that have limited time for schooling. And as an added benefit many online degree programs have a lower tuition cost compared to their on-campus alternatives. Commuting costs from Concord CA are also reduced and some of the study materials can be accessed on line as well. All of these advantages can make online electrician trade schools more economical and accessible. And a number are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our due diligence checklist.

Topics to Ask Electrician Tech Schools

Questions to ask Concord CA electrician schoolsWhen you have decided to obtain a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to focus your training options. Considering that there are so many electrician vocational and trade schools in the Concord CA region, it’s important to have a checklist of criteria that each program must meet. The first two that we discussed were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an degree online, then that needs to be a feature that your chosen school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be important when making your determination, there are other factors that must be considered as well. Below is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to research prior to enrolling in an electrical tech school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician trade programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for example electrical technology. Make certain that the Concord CA program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you acquire an excellent education, it may help in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, some states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate may suggest that students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. It may also indicate that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which may produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist Concord CA graduates acquire apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician training programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrician businesses or labor unions. Check if the schools you are considering have working relationships with Concord CA area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical tech you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Concord CA electrical company if they can give you some pointers. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Concord residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Speak with a few of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to a few of the instructors and find out what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Concord CA, confirm that the programs you are reviewing provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family issues.
