How to Find the Right Electrician Trade School near Alva Florida

Alva FL electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to becoming an electrical tradesman or contractor is finding an electrician trade school near Alva FL. But with numerous technical schools to pick from, just how do you go about making certain that you enroll in the right one? Particularly since there are so many points to examine. For instance, many students will start by looking for schools that are close to their home. Once they have located some that are within driving distance, they will choose the one with the least expensive tuition. While location and cost are significant, they are not the sole qualifications that need to be examined. Also important are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, as well as their job placement and graduation rates. These and other qualifications should contribute toward your final decision when choosing an electrician school. We will discuss that checklist in more detail later in this article. But to begin with, let’s talk a little bit about being an electrician and the educational options that are accessible.

Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Options

Alva FL electrician on power line poleThere are several options to obtain electrician instruction in a vocational or trade school near Alva FL. You can enroll in a diploma or certificate program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at certain schools, but are not as common as the first three options. In many cases these programs are made available in conjunction with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by the majority of states to be licensed or if you intend to become certified. Following are brief summaries of the 3 most common programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually provided by Florida vocational and trade schools and take about a year to finish. They furnish a good foundation and are aimed towards individuals who would like to get into an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees involve 2 years to complete and are offered by Florida community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more comprehensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to join their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are available at some Florida colleges, but are less popular at 4 years than the other shorter programs. Many states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically four years be performed before licensing. For that reason, the majority of students are anxious to begin their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician License and Certification Guidelines

Alva FL electrician wiring boxElectricians in Alva FL can perform a wide range of functions, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in most states or municipalities. The period of apprenticeship differs by state, but usually about four to five years of practical experience is needed in order to take the licensing exam. The exams commonly evaluate electrical theory and general knowledge, in addition to knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary means for an electrician to identify him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available vary by state and may be acquired in various specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually involves 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician tech school that you choose not only furnishes a strong academic foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you might need to pass in the future.

Attending Electrician Schools Online

Alva FL student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you may have considered is choosing an electrician online program to earn a degree or a certificate. While online training programs are becoming more popular as a means of attending class without needing to travel, in this case they are not completely internet based. Pretty much all electrician training programs require partial attendance on campus to get practical hands-on training. But since the balance of the classes may be attended online, distance learning might be a more practical alternative for students that have minimal time for schooling. And as an added benefit many online degree programs have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their on campus counterparts. Driving costs from Alva FL are also reduced and a portion of the study materials can be available on line also. All of these advantages can make online electrician vocational schools more affordable and convenient. And a number are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our due diligence checklist.

Questions to Ask Electrician Technical Schools

Questions to ask Alva FL electrician schoolsOnce you have decided to earn a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to refine your training options. Because there are numerous electrician trade and vocational schools in the Alva FL region, it’s imperative to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must satisfy. The first 2 that we discussed were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that needs to be an option that your chosen school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your decision, there are additional variables that must be considered as well. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifiers that you will need to research before choosing an electrical technical school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician trade schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example electrical technology. Confirm that the Alva FL program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you acquire a superior education, it may help in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, some states require that the electrician training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate could indicate that students were dissatisfied with the course and dropped out. It may also indicate that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which may mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Alva FL graduates obtain apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician vocational programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrician contractors or trade unions. Check if the schools you are considering have working relationships with Alva FL area electricians or electrical specialists. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical technician you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Alva FL electrical company if they can provide some tips. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Alva residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there may be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Speak with several of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with some of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Alva FL, confirm that the schools you are reviewing provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family issues.

You originally came to this website due to an interest in Online Electrician Classes and wanting more information on the topic How To Become A Commercial Electrician. But as we have covered in this article, there are several things that you will need to examine and compare among the training programs you are reviewing. It’s a prerequisite that any electrician training that you are examining includes a lot of hands-on instruction. Classes should be smaller in size and every student must have their own equipment to train with. Classroom instruction should provide a real-world context, and the training program should be current and in-line with industry standards. Programs vary in duration and the type of credential provided, so you will have to determine what length of program and degree or certificate will best satisfy your needs. Every training program offers unique possibilities for certification as well. Perhaps the best way to research your final list of schools is to visit each campus and speak with the students and faculty. Take the time to sit in on a few classes. Inspect the campus and facilities. Make certain that you are confident that the training program you choose is the best one for you. With the proper training, hard work and dedication, the final result will be a new trade as a professional electrician in Alva FL.
