Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Options

Terra Ceia FL electrician on power line poleThere are multiple approaches to receive electrician training in a trade or technical school near Terra Ceia FL. You can enroll in a diploma or certificate program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some schools, but are not as common as the first three alternatives. Often these programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by most states in order to become licensed or if you intend to earn certification. Following are short summaries of the 3 most common programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually provided by Florida technical and trade schools and take approximately a year to complete. They provide a good foundation and are geared towards individuals who would like to get into an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs involve 2 years to complete and are offered by Florida community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more comprehensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain Florida colleges, but are less popular at four years than the other shorter programs. The majority of states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically 4 years be performed prior to licensing. For that reason, the majority of students are anxious to commence their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Criteria

Terra Ceia FL electrician wiring boxElectricians in Terra Ceia FL can carry out a wide range of tasks, such as testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in most municipalities and states. The length of apprenticeship differs by state, but normally about four to five years of practical experience is called for before taking the licensing examination. The exams typically assess electrical theory and general knowledge, as well as knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also a voluntary method for an electrician to distinguish her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered vary by state and can be acquired in many specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually includes three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician tech school that you select not only delivers a solid educational foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you may need to pass in the future.

The first 2 that we discussed were location and tuition expense. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that must be a feature that your chosen school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be critical when making your decision, there are other variables that must be taken into account also. Below is a checklist of those added qualifiers that you will need to analyze prior to selecting an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician trade programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, such as electrical technology. Confirm that the Terra Ceia FL program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you receive a quality education, it can help in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited programs. Also, a number of states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate may signify that students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. It might also indicate that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which can result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist Terra Ceia FL graduates obtain apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most electrician training programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrician businesses or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have working relationships with Terra Ceia FL area electricians or electrical specialists. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical tech you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Terra Ceia FL electrical contracting company if they can give you some tips. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your Terra Ceia residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there may be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Speak to a few of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to some of the instructors and find out what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Terra Ceia FL, confirm that the programs you are reviewing offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family emergencies.

    Terra Ceia, Florida

Terra Ceia is an unincorporated community in Manatee County, Florida, United States that includes the 1,932 acres (7.82 km2) Terra Ceia Preserve.[4] It is located on Terra Ceia Island on the Southern shore of Tampa Bay near the intersection of US 19 and I-275, at the southern end of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge.

The community is part of the Bradenton–Sarasota–Venice Metropolitan Statistical Area. The 1,932-acre (7.82 km2) Terra Ceia Preserve is also located in the area and protected by the Southwest Florida Water Management District and Florida Department of Environmental Protection. It offers fishing and hiking.[5]

Terra Ceia was originally settled by Joseph Atzeroth, Julia and their daughter Eliza in 1853 of Germany who were trying to escape political turmoil. Terra Ceia was known for its rich soil on the island, and at one time was known internationally. Some of the food was featured in William Taft's inaugural parade. In 1897 the town was listed with a population of 120 homeowners. The town's main commercial district developed along Terra Ceia Bay when most shipping was on the water with businesses and homes lining a waterfront street with many a business being built on docks for easy access. The commercial district shifted when the railroad arrived in the early 1900s and it's center moved more inland. The coming of the railroad most likely resulted in a spike of population and by 1913 the local newspaper reported there was 700 residents. At the town's peak there was a general store, bank, packing house, and railroad depot.
