Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Programs

Pluckemin NJ electrician on power line poleThere are three general ways to receive electrician training in a technical or vocational school near Pluckemin NJ. You can choose a diploma or certificate program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at certain schools, but are not as common as the first three options. Frequently these programs are made available together with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by most states to become licensed or if you would like to earn certification. Following are brief summaries of the three most typical programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually provided by New Jersey trade and technical schools and require approximately a year to finish. They furnish a good foundation and are aimed towards students who wish to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees involve 2 years to finish and are offered by New Jersey community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more extensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to join their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are accessible at some New Jersey colleges, but are less preferred at 4 years than the other shorter programs. Many states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically 4 years be performed prior to licensing. Because of that, most students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their academic program.

After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in most states or municipalities. The duration of apprenticeship differs by state, but normally around 4 to 5 years of prior experience is called for before taking the licensing examination. The exams usually evaluate electrical theory and general knowledge, as well as understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional method for an electrician to identify her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered differ by state and may be obtained in several specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases includes three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician vocational school that you enroll in not only delivers a strong educational foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you may need to pass in the future.

And even though all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your determination, there are additional factors that need to be considered also. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifiers that you will need to assess before choosing an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician technical programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for example electrical technology. Confirm that the Pluckemin NJ school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you get a quality education, it can assist in securing financial aid or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited programs. Additionally, some states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate may indicate that students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. It may also signify that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which may result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist Pluckemin NJ grads secure apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician vocational programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating technical and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrician companies or labor unions. Check if the schools you are considering have referring relationships with Pluckemin NJ area electricians or electrical specialists. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical specialist you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Pluckemin NJ electrical company if they can give you some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you can move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Pluckemin residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much personalized training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Speak with a few of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with some of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Pluckemin NJ, confirm that the programs you are reviewing provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Pluckemin, New Jersey

Pluckemin is an unincorporated community located within Bedminster Township, in Somerset County, New Jersey, United States.[2] It was also known historically as Pluckamin.[1][3] It was the site of several historic events during the American Revolutionary War.

After the victory at Princeton, General George Washington and his army camped nearby from January 4 to 6, 1777 on the march to Morristown.[4][5] On January 5, General Washington set up his headquarters in a local Pluckemin house, which later became known as the John Fenner House, and wrote his battle report to John Hancock.[6] He also ordered military honors for the battle death of British Captain William Leslie, a friend of the American Dr. Benjamin Rush.[7] The gravestone is in the graveyard of the former St. Paul's Lutheran Church (built 1757), where the Pluckemin Presbyterian Church is now located.[8]

On February 18, 1779, General Knox organized a grand celebration, The French Alliance Ball, for the first anniversary of the alliance with France. In attendance were General Washington and his wife Martha. Over four hundred people enjoyed dancing, drinking and fireworks.[10][11][12]
