Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Programs

Mc Intosh NM electrician on power line poleThere are multiple ways to receive electrician training in a trade or technical school near Mc Intosh NM. You may select a diploma or certificate program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at some schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three alternatives. Often these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship, which are required by the majority of states in order to be licensed or if you intend to become certified. Bellow are brief descriptions of the 3 most common programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are generally offered by New Mexico vocational and trade schools and require about a year to complete. They provide a solid foundation and are geared towards those who would like to enter an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees involve 2 years to finish and are offered by New Mexico community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more extensive education while supplying the foundation that readies students to join their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some New Mexico institutions, but are less favored at 4 years than the other shorter programs. Many states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases 4 years be carried out before licensing. For that reason, most students are eager to begin their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Requirements

Mc Intosh NM electrician wiring boxElectricians in Mc Intosh NM can undertake a vast array of services, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in most municipalities and states. The duration of apprenticeship varies by state, but generally around 4 to 5 years of prior experience is called for before taking the licensing exam. The exams typically test general knowledge and electrical theory, in addition to understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional method for an electrician to distinguish him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered differ by state and can be earned in many specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases includes 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician vocational school that you pick not only delivers a solid academic foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you might be required to pass in the future.

Points to Ask Electrician Technical Schools

Questions to ask Mc Intosh NM electrician schoolsNow that you have made a decision to earn a certificate, diploma or degree, you can begin to refine your training options. Since there are numerous electrician trade and vocational schools in the Mc Intosh NM region, it’s imperative to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must satisfy. The first two that we talked about were location and the cost of tuition. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that must be an option that your chosen school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be important when making your decision, there are additional variables that need to be considered also. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to assess prior to selecting an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician technical programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, such as electrical technology. Make sure that the Mc Intosh NM program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you obtain an excellent education, it can help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, some states require that the electrician training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate may signify that students were dissatisfied with the course and dropped out. It might also suggest that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which may produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Mc Intosh NM graduates acquire apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician trade programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrician businesses or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are comparing have referring partnerships with Mc Intosh NM area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical technician you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Mc Intosh NM electrical company if they can provide some suggestions. Also keep in mind that unless you can move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Mc Intosh home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there may be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Talk with several of the students and get their opinions relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to a few of the instructors and find out what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Mc Intosh NM, confirm that the programs you are comparing provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family emergencies.
