Annona TX electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to learning to be an electrical contractor or tradesman is enrolling in an electrician trade school near Annona TX. But with so many technical schools to pick from, just how do you go about making certain that you enroll in the best one? Especially because there are a number of factors to evaluate. For example, many potential students will begin by searching for schools that are nearby their home. After they have identified a few that are within commuting distance, they will select the one with the least expensive tuition. Even though location and cost are of importance, they are not the sole things that must be examined. Also critical are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, as well as their job placement and graduation rates. These and other qualifications should help mold your ultimate decision when picking an electrician training school. We will cover that checklist in greater detail later in this post. But first, let’s talk a little bit about becoming an electrician and the educational choices that are available.

Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Options

Annona TX electrician on power line poleThere are three general options to receive electrician training in a trade or technical school near Annona TX. You may select a diploma or certificate program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain schools, but are not as common as the other three alternatives. In many cases these programs are offered together with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by the majority of states in order to be licensed or if you intend to earn certification. Following are short descriptions of the three most typical programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally offered by Texas technical and trade schools and require approximately a year to complete. They provide a solid foundation and are aimed towards individuals who wish to get into an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees require two years to complete and are provided by Texas junior or community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more comprehensive education while supplying the foundation that readies students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are accessible at certain Texas institutions, but are less popular at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases four years be carried out prior to licensing. Because of that, many students are anxious to commence their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Criteria

Annona TX electrician wiring boxElectricians in Annona TX can carry out a wide range of tasks, including installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in most states or municipalities. The duration of apprenticeship varies by state, but commonly around four to five years of experience is called for before taking the licensing examination. The exams usually assess general knowledge and electrical theory, along with knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional method for an electrician to distinguish him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered differ by state and may be earned in several specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually involves three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician tech school that you choose not only furnishes a strong academic foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you may be required to pass in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Online Training Classes

Annona TX student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you might have considered is enrolling in an online electrician school to earn a certificate or degree. Although online schools are becoming more popular as a means of attending class without the need for travel, in this situation they are not entirely internet based. Just about all electrician schools require partial attendance on-campus to obtain hands-on practical training. But since the balance of the classes may be accessed online, distance learning may be a more convenient alternative for individuals that have limited time for schooling. And as a bonus numerous online schools have a lower tuition cost compared to their on-campus competitors. Driving expenses from Annona TX are also lessened and some of the study materials can be available on line also. All of these advantages can make online electrician tech schools more economical and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will cover in our due diligence checklist.

Topics to Ask Electrician Technical Schools

Questions to ask Annona TX electrician schoolsOnce you have made a decision to earn a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to narrow down your school options. Considering that there are so many electrician vocational and trade schools in the Annona TX area, it’s essential to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must satisfy. The first 2 that we talked about were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an degree online, then that must be an option that your chosen school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be critical when making your decision, there are additional variables that must be considered as well. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to research before choosing an electrical technical school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician technical schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for instance electrical technology. Make sure that the Annona TX school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you obtain a superior education, it may help in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited programs. Additionally, some states require that the electrician training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate might suggest that students were disappointed with the course and quit. It could also indicate that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which may result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Annona TX students obtain apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician technical programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrician businesses or trade unions. Check if the schools you are considering have referring relationships with Annona TX area electricians or electrical companies. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by providing hands-on training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical technician you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Annona TX electrical company if they can give you some tips. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school must be within driving distance of your Annona home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there might be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much personalized training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Talk with several of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to a few of the instructors and find out what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Annona TX, verify that the programs you are looking at provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family issues.
