Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Programs

Flomot TX electrician on power line poleThere are several ways to obtain electrician instruction in a vocational or trade school near Flomot TX. You may select a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at a few schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three options. Frequently these programs are offered together with an apprenticeship, which are required by most states to become licensed or if you wish to become certified. Following are short summaries of the 3 most prevalent programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually provided by Texas trade and technical schools and require about a year to finish. They provide a good foundation and are geared towards individuals who wish to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees involve two years to finish and are offered by Texas community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more extensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are offered at certain Texas institutions, but are less popular at 4 years than the other shorter programs. The majority of states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases 4 years be completed before licensing. For that reason, the majority of students are anxious to commence their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Criteria

After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in most states or municipalities. The duration of apprenticeship differs by state, but typically about 4 to 5 years of prior experience is called for in order to take the licensing examination. The exams usually assess general knowledge and electrical theory, along with understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional means for an electrician to distinguish him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available differ by state and may be earned in numerous specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually involves 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician vocational school that you pick not only furnishes a strong academic foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you might need to pass in the future.

Topics to Ask Electrician Trade Schools

Questions to ask Flomot TX electrician schoolsNow that you have decided to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can begin to focus your school options. Considering that there are so many electrician vocational and trade schools in the Flomot TX area, it’s imperative to have a checklist of criteria that each school must meet. The initial two that we discussed were location and the cost of tuition. If you are interested in earning an degree online, then that needs to be a feature that your chosen school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be important when making your decision, there are other variables that must be taken into account also. Following is a checklist of those added qualifiers that you will need to assess before selecting an electrical tech school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician technical schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for instance electrical technology. Make sure that the Flomot TX program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you obtain a quality education, it can help in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, many states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate could suggest that students were disappointed with the course and quit. It might also indicate that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which may result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Flomot TX graduates acquire apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician training programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical companies or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have referring partnerships with Flomot TX area electricians or electrical companies. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical specialist you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Flomot TX electrical contracting company if they can provide some pointers. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can move, the school must be within driving distance of your Flomot residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much individualized training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Speak to some of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Flomot TX, check that the programs you are reviewing provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family emergencies.

It is situated at the junction of Farm Roads 97 and 599 in northeastern Motley County, between the North Pease River and Quitaque Creek.[1] The community lies approximately 14 miles south of Quitaque and 106 miles southeast of Amarillo.[2]

The name is a portmanteau of two counties, Floyd and Motley, as the original post office – built in 1902 – was located on the county line. By that time, a school and store had already been established at the site. In 1915, the post office was moved to the residence of W.R. Welch. By the mid-1930s, Flomot had two cotton gins, two grocery stores, several restaurants, and a service station.[3] The population peaked at around 200 in 1940. Thereafter, the community began losing businesses and residents to larger cities. The number of inhabitants had declined to 181 by 1980 and remained at that level through 2000.[1]
