Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Programs

Telferner TX electrician on power line poleThere are three general approaches to get electrician training in a trade or technical school near Telferner TX. You may select a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at a few schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three options. Frequently these programs are offered together with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by most states in order to become licensed or if you would like to earn certification. Bellow are short summaries of the 3 most common programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically offered by Texas technical and trade schools and require about a year to complete. They provide a good foundation and are aimed towards those who wish to enter an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs require two years to complete and are provided by Texas community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more extensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to join their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are offered at some Texas colleges, but are less popular at four years than the other shorter programs. Many states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases 4 years be performed before licensing. Because of that, the majority of students are eager to commence their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician License and Certification Prerequisites

After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in the majority of states or municipalities. The duration of apprenticeship varies by state, but typically around 4 to 5 years of practical experience is needed before taking the licensing examination. The exams usually assess general knowledge and electrical theory, along with understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional method for an electrician to differentiate him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered differ by state and can be acquired in many specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually involves 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician trade school that you enroll in not only furnishes a solid educational foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you may be required to take in the future.

The first 2 that we discussed were location and tuition expense. If you are interested in earning an degree online, then that needs to be a feature that your final school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be important when making your decision, there are additional variables that need to be considered also. Following is a checklist of those added qualifiers that you will need to assess before choosing an electrical tech school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician vocational schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for instance electrical technology. Make sure that the Telferner TX program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you receive a superior education, it may assist in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Additionally, many states require that the electrician training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate might signify that students were unhappy with the program and quit. It may also signify that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which can result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist Telferner TX students secure apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician vocational programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and trade schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical businesses or trade unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have referring partnerships with Telferner TX area electricians or electrical specialists. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical technician you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Telferner TX electrical contractor if they can give you some tips. Also keep in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Telferner residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there can be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Speak with some of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to a few of the instructors and learn what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Telferner TX, confirm that the programs you are considering provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family responsibilities.

    Telferner, Texas

Telferner is an unincorporated community in Victoria County, Texas, United States. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had an estimated population of 700 in 2000.[1] It is part of the Victoria, Texas, Metropolitan Statistical Area.

    Telferner is located at 28°50′56″N 96°53′26″W / 28.84889°N 96.89056°W / 28.84889; -96.89056 (28.8488772, -96.8905395). It is situated at the junction of U.S. Highway 59 and FM 1686, about eight miles northeast of Victoria.[1]

The community was established in 1882, when the New York, Texas and Mexican Railway from Victoria to Rosenberg was completed. The station was located on John N. Keeran's California Ranch. A post office opened at the site in 1895 under the name Keeran. In 1908, the community was renamed Jasmine. Soon after, the name was changed again to Telferner, after Italian count Joseph Telferner, who was the president and one of the builders of the New York, Texas and Mexican Railway. By 1904, Telferner was home to roughly 100 residents, with five stores, a gin, and a lumberyard. Despite the discovery of an oilfield in the area, the population declined substantially over the following years. By 1985, however, it had rebounded to around 300. That figure had risen to 700 by 2000.[1]
